Which medical services are subject to prior authorization?
Prior authorization as a condition that you will be entitled to reimbursement of the costs of medical services provided in other EU Member State based on a previously issued medical referral from a doctor in Slovenia (Directive 2011/24/EU) is required for:
- hospital medical services that include an overnight stay,
- medical services that require highly specialised and expensive medical infrastructures or medical equipment:
- scintillation camera with coincidence detection in positron emission or without coincidence detection,
- positron camera,
- positron emission tomography,
- computed tomography,
- hyperbaric chamber,
- device for nuclear magnetic resonance imaging for clinical use,
- nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer for clinical use.
Am I entitled to the reimbursement of costs of health care services paid for in the Republic of Slovenia in my home country?

I am insured in another EU member state. How can I access planned treatment in Slovenia?
Foreign insured individuals can access planned treatment in Slovenia according to:
- Slovenian legislation,
- Regulation (EC) 883/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the coordination of social security systems,
- Directive 2011/24/EU on the application of patients' rights in cross-border healthcare.
If you pay for planned treatment in Slovenia, you are entitled to reimbursement of costs in the country where you are insured, according to the method and procedure valid in the country of insurance.
Regarding your rights to reimbursement of costs for planned treatment abroad you should contact the national contact point for cross-border healthcare in your country or your national health insurance fund.
In accordance with Article 77.c of the Act Amending the Health Care and Health Insurance Act, healthcare providers in Slovenia must give information regarding treatment options that they provide, waiting periods, quality and safety, prices of health care services. That means that you have to contact health care provider directly in order to get more information.
